Goalie Gals: Two juniors serve as varsity’s goalkeepers

Behind her, there’s nothing but net. But in front of her are 11 players strategizing against her, hoping to get the ball past her grasp.

“I’m the last offender,” Chamberlain said. “It’s my job to make sure the other team doesn’t get a goal.”

Chamberlain is one of two goalies on the varsity girls soccer team. Junior Cassidee Johnson is the other.  The girls have been playing since freshman year, and have had some crazy moments at goalie.

“[One time] a girl took a shot that I thought it was going out, but it hit the side post. Then [it] hit me in the face, hitting the post again, and then my face,” Johnson said. “I ended up making the save but everyone was laughing.”

Even though being a goalie may look easy, it can be far from it. The girls have to be able to be really quick on their feet, think fast, and have excellent communication with their teammates.

“It’s the one position on the field that is totally different than all the others,” Johnson said. “I get to use my hands, punt the ball, but also get away with fouling.”

At the Rumbler’s print deadlines, the team was 1-6 in district. The girls played Cedar Park Tuesday night and will take on Cedar Creek in a non-district game during the break. They wrap up the season at Vandegrift March 20 and at home against Marble Falls March 23.

“ We’ve grown a lot as a team. We’ve had a lot improvement from last year,” Chamberlain said. “I’m really excited for both Vandy and Marble Falls. I’m ready to give Vandy a run for their money.”
