Rouse High School and Wiley Middle School will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 6 due to logistical and safety concerns from the weekend’s wildfires. Rouse is being used as a Red Cross Shelter for families affected by the fire.
According the Austin American-Statesman, 500 people have been evacuated and at least 13 homes destroyed in the fire that began Monday afternoon.
Several wildfires across Central Texas have forced evacuations in Leander, Bastrop and the Steiner Ranch area. LISD schools in the Steiner Ranch area, including Canyon Ridge Middle School and Laura Bush, Steiner Ranch, and River Ridge Elementary schools, will also be closed Tuesday. Four Points Middle School and Vandegrift High School will also be closed since Vandegrift is serving as a Red Cross shelter.
Athletic, fine arts, practices and extracurricular activities at all eight schools are canceled for Sept. 6. The district will reassess the situation Tuesday and post updates at the LISD website.
The Red Cross of Central Texas’ website has a list of evacuation locations and how to donate to victims.
