Four Girls Advance to State Track Meet

Four girls will compete at the state meet Friday after winning their events at regionals. Allison Agbasoga won the triple jump, leaping 37 feet, 2 and a half inches, beating the district record.

“I went really well,” Agbasoga said. “I’m really excited for state.”

She was also part of the 1600 relay team, consisting of Marissa Naab, Agbasoga, Adriana Reyes, and Justine Franklin, which took first in the mile-long race.

“[Being regional champion] was awesome,” Franklin said. “It was the best feeling ever. I thought we were amazing.”

Also at regionals, Franklin placed in the 400 meter dash while Agbasoga took fourth in the 200 meter dash.

“Our youth showed through once again in some events, but at the same time we showed toughness and resilience in the mile relay,” girls coach Kelly Thompson said. “Our lack of maturity caused us to be tired mentally and emotionally.”

At district, 29 athletes placed with the girls’ varsity taking second overall and the boys finishing fifth.

“It was a good meet,” Thompson said. “We had a good performance all-around.”

Agbasoga led the girls, placing first in all of her events, including the 200 meter dash and the triple jump.

“Getting first in everything was a big accomplishment for me,” Agbasoga said. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger than last year.”

Agbasoga was also part of the relay teams that won the 400 and 1600 meter relays.

“I’m really proud of us,” Agbasoga said. “We’ve worked so hard since August.”

Franklin, who was also part of the winning relay teams, also took home an individual medal. Franklin won the 400 meter dash in 59.73 seconds, just under a minute for the quarter-mile run.

“The meet went really well, it went better than I expected,” Franklin said. “I’ve gotten a lot faster this year.”

In all, 17 girls placed in 15 events with four advancing to regionals.

“We’ve grown up a lot since last year,” Thompson said. “We have another year of experience.”

On the guys’ side, the boys varsity had 12 members place at district.

“We did very well,” boys coach Luke Harrison said. “We competed well in district. That’s one of the big events and we shined very well at it.”

One of the harder parts of the meet was battling the unexpected chilly cold front.

“The weather could have been better,” Harrison said. “But they were focused, and they ran hard.”

Junior Michael Botello took first in the 400 meter dash, and was part of 1600 meter relay that took third.

“I felt better about the 400 meter dash,” Botello said. “That’s what I’ve been training for.”

A second 1600 meter relay team took fourth in the mile-long event, and the 800 meter relay team finished third, qualifying for regionals.

“We didn’t do as good as we could have,” Caleb Boyles said. “We normally run better, but we had a bad handoff. We still got third so that’s still pretty good.”

In the field events, sophomore Logan Kinder placed first in the triple jump.

“I’ve gotten a lot more consistent than last year,” Kinder said. “I felt pretty good about it, because I got first.”

Although Botello was the only athlete to qualify for finals at regionals, the team was happy with their performance.

“There was good competition and I thought we ran well that day,” Boyles said.
