Newspaper, Yearbook win 29 IAAs, receives Stars from ILPC
April 24, 2015
The newspaper and yearbook staffs received 29 Individual Achievement Awards and two Star ratings from UIL’s Interscholastic League Press Conference, April 18-19.
“I think it’s a blessing to go compete against schools that are top notch like Hendrickson,” senior Kristin Nicol said. “I think it gives us the chance to practice and better ourselves and the future so that our paper and school.”
Newspaper won a Bronze Star for this year’s Raider Rumbler and the Yearbook won a Silver Star for the 2014 Replay.
“I feel like we did a really good job making our theme go through the book last year,” senior Maddie Bonvillian said. “I’m really glad all of our hard work got us silver.”

Yearbook won 12 IAAs for writing, photography and design with two first place winners. Suede Mora, Amanda Slaton and Janessa Spencer won first place in the Student Life Feature Story category for a story about Homecoming proposals. The staff took first place for the Index. Both first place winners were up for Tops in Texas, which means they competed against the other UIL division’s first place winners. The Index was named the Tops in Texas winner and will be featured in a booklet ILPC puts out of all of the Tops in Texas winners for 2015. All Yearbook IAAs are for the 2013-14 Replay.
“I was surprised we got so many IAAs,” Bonvillian said. “But we worked really hard so I guess it makes sense.”
Newspaper won 17 IAAs for writing, design, graphics, photography and packaging with three first place finishes. Kristin Nicol’s Editorial Page/Spread Design that featured the library editorial won first place, Nicol and Alyssa Jingling took first in In-Depth News/Feature Package for the sexting centerspread and Jingling won first place in Entertainment Page/Spread Design for Oscar page. All Newspaper IAAs are from April 2014 to February 2015.

“At the beginning of this year I kind of jumped into newspaper without knowing much,” Jinging said. “So I’m really happy about getting recognition from the hard work.”
