Halloween costume ideas for the budget-conscious

Dressing up on Halloween is a fun tradition for everyone, but it can seem daunting to come up with something to dress up as, especially if you have a small budget. Here are some creative ideas to pull together a simple costume.

Classic Ghost
One of the simplest costumes in the history of Halloween, the sheet-cut-out ghost is simple, fast, and easy. Simply cut two eyeholes out of a sheet and trim it so it’s not too long.

Scarecrow
Wear a flannel shirt, faded blue jeans and a straw hat. Stuff plastic bags, raffia or yarn into the sleeves, pant legs and brim of the hat for straw.

Smiley Face
Draw and color a big smiley face on a piece of poster board. Hang it around your neck with a piece of ribbon, and wear all yellow or black.

Bumblebee
Tape strips of yellow duct tape horizontally across a black t shirt and a pair of sweatpants. Add a classic pair of butterfly wings and attach pom-poms to a headband with pipe cleaners.

Beauty Pageant Queen
An old prom dress, tiara and of course, lots of gaudy jewelry can be easily found in almost any dress-up bin. Don’t forget the heels and sash.

Skunk
Wear all black, preferable sweats, with stripes of white duct tape running down the back.
