Grab your cowboy boots, spurs, and country accent, and mosey on down to see the musical Oklahoma!. Set in the early 1900s, this classic Western romance, with a dash of comedy, is the story of farm girl Laurey Williams, whose heart is fought over by two cowboys, Curly McLain and Jud Fry.

This classic varies greatly with the contemporary styled musicals the theatre program usually picks, in order to give the students diversity.

“We have done a lot of modern musicals which is great and awesome, but a part of me wants to provide a full experience for my students,” theatre director Stephanie Smith said. “So if we do nothing but real modern musicals then I feel like I’m shorting them that style of musical theatre.”

There are 86 students part of the production, including 18 in the orchestra providing the music for the show.

“It is a really unique play that I haven’t gotten to do before,” senior Chase Massey said. “And it will hopefully give me good and new experiences.”

One of the larger roles went to freshman Meghan Pangonas. Playing Aunt Eller, the freshman is eager to prove that she has what it takes even though she’s young.

“Coming in as a freshman and getting a role, it is probably the best thing,” Pangonas said. “It’s nice to have people believe in me, and I’m ready to show them their faith wasn’t wasted.”

Pangonas has been practicing her lines in the free time, working on the memorization and the accent.

Oklahoma! is a great musical and love story,” Pangonas said. “And anyone can find something to have fun with or relate to it.”
