All of his life he heard stories about people making a difference. But he decided to make his own stories.

At the age of 13, freshman Grant Haden, went on his first mission trip to Acuna Mexico. A year later he went to Honduras. He learned that God had a plan for him, and now it was clearer than ever.

“It showed me that God is everywhere and no matter where you came or what you do God will be there,” Haden said. “They really impacted us by helping us see how God helps in many ways.”

While in Mexico he helped work a medical station for the locals, and in Honduras he helped orphans by building flower beds for their school and held a Vacation Bible School.

“I am doing this because I really love seeing God work in many ways and helping others,” Haden said. “I enjoy this because it shows how no matter how old or young you are you do make a difference and can help people grow closer to God.”

The freshman doesn’t just prepare for the long bus rides and sitting on a plane for hours, he has to prepare for the trip itself.

“I had to get myself mentally prepared for being in a different area,” Haden said. “And when I come home, I really enjoy all the things people take advantage of, like air conditioning, seeing friends and family, a working shower and clean water.”

On his trips, Haden saw a wide spectrum of images – from beautiful waterfalls to run-down shacks people lived in. But nothing compared to being rushed out of a church in Mexico. It was an all-Spanish speaking church and after only being there for a few minutes everyone was told to leave and go up a hill. A gas station near the church was up in flames, because of an illegal oil exchange.

“I had never been so nervous and confused at the same time,” Haden said. “But I was glad I was safe with the people I love.”

On both trips Haden went with other students from his youth group at Hill Country Bible Church. He was the youngest person to go on the trip to Mexico, and was gone for around a week.

“My biggest supporters are my parents, they both have gone on trips and enjoy seeing me do something that we both love,” Haden said.

While Haden was in Honduras he came across Proverbs 3:5-6, this verse had a lot of meaning to him while he was away. It changed his view on life and really showed him that he can put all his trust in the Lord.

He already wants to leave again, but this time he wants to go farther than the Americas.

“I really want to go to Russia, because that’s where my younger sister is from,” Haden said. “Also, I want to see the culture there, and I really wanted to help the kids.”
