The varsity football team gathers for one final huddle after the Lake Travis loss.

David didn’t win the battle this time.

At the pep rally Thursday morning, head coach Joshua Mann likened the match-up with Lake Travis to the Biblical story of David and Goliath, reminding the crowd that David won that battle. But the Cavaliers dominated the bi-district playoff game, scoring seven touchdowns in a 54-7 rout.

Lake Travis showed their speed and power on the first play of the game, running the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown that was called back for holding. The Raiders were unable to take advantage of a fumble Danny Benitez recovered three plays later and the Cavs got on the board with a 65-yard touchdown pass on their second series. Senior Brandon Wells intercepted a pass on Lake Travis’s third possession, but again the Raiders were unable to turn it into a scoring opportunity.

After Lake Travis added a second touchdown in the second quarter, the Raiders finally got their offense clicking and moved downfield into the red zone. But a fumble within the 10 was recovered by the Cavs, ending the drive without points. The Cavaliers added a field goal with less than five minutes to play, making the score 17-0 at halftime.

Any hopes the Raiders had of making a comeback were decimated in the third quarter when Lake Travis scored five touchdowns in the third quarter.

The Cavs scored on a 2-yard pass in the corner of the end zone, a call coaches disputed, saying the player stepped out of bounds earlier in the play.

Two more touchdowns in the third came off of Raider turnovers. The Raiders fumbled on their second series of the second half, giving Lake Travis the ball on the Raider 29. Wells then intercepted Dominic DeLira’s pass, but fumbled the ball right back to the Cavs on the same play. The Cavs scored on the next play, increasing their lead to 31-0. Lake Travis added the third score of the third after picking off Billy Ray McCrary’s pass at the 23 and throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

The Cavaliers added a 37-yard touchdown and ran a punt return for a touchdown to bring the lead to 51-0, and make it five touchdowns scored in 12 minutes.

Lake Travis kicked a 24-yard field goal early in the fourth for their final score of the night.

The Raiders finally got on the board in the fourth when AJ Badour broke away for a 43-yard touchdown with six minutes left in the game.

The loss ended the Raiders’ season in the first round of playoffs. They finished third in district with a 4-3 record and 5-6 overall.

Mann spoke with the players after the game about the character, integrity and heart he’d seen from them throughout the season. He encouraged them to not waste time on sad tears, to be grateful for how much they’ve accomplished and how the program has grown.

For the seniors, they have gone from a team that had never seen a win, to playoff appearances three years in a row, including reaching the state semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2013.

“You wrote history. You made history,” Mann said. “That cannot be taken away from you.”
