Lobster hand boy. The world’s smallest woman. A pinhead. The legless woman. Conjoined twins. A bearded lady. The three-breasted woman. A con-artist. The strong man. Oh, and let’s not forget Twisty, the killer clown. American Horror Story: Freak Show left nothing out that the human eye might find freaky or terrifying.

Freak Show is set in the small-town backdrop of Jupiter, Florida in 1950. The new season centers around Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) struggling to keep a sideshow displaying human deformities from collapsing.

The show opens with the discovery of Bette and Dot Tattler, the conjoined twins (both played by Sarah Paulson) and their induction to Elsa’s Cabinet of Curiosities, the local freak show. The show features a bearded lady and Mar’s assistant (Kathy Bates) along with her lobster-handed son (Evan Peters). But no American Horror Story style freak show wouldn’t be complete without a bit of horror, brought to you by Twisty the killer clown, sure to plant his smile deep in your nightmares.

The acting is on point, however Lange’s character has a German accent that could take some adjusting to. Since the creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, write the parts for the characters, they all excel in their roles. Most memorable of course being Lange as Elsa Mars, being a seemingly one dimensional character on top, has a lot of substance and you feeling something for her by the end of the episode.
