Introducing a new rendition of the classic DC comic, The Flash, CW brings cheesiness, unrequited love, thrilling twists and reminders of why exactly we love superheroes. The original DC comics cast four men as the Flash, passing down the title when needed, and our Flash is Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), a brilliant forensic assistant to the local police department.
Following the mysterious death of his mother, Allen grows into the role of a brilliant friend for Iris West (Candice Patton), the object of his affections. As a result of a mugging gone wrong, both Allen and West miss out on a viewing of Dr. Harrison Wells’ (Tom Cavanagh) particle accelerator and by happenstance, Allen gets struck by a mutated lightning bolt.
Nine months later, he wakes up to find he has superhuman speed and a healing ability to match, but he’s not the only metahuman in the city. A robber who was attempting to escape by plane, got caught in the same storm, giving him the power to influence the weather. Utilizing his brand new powers, Allen takes down the robber, aided by his surrogate father, Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin). Upon realizing he could truly use his powers for good, Allen vows to help protect people and step into the role he was truly chosen for.
Admittedly, the pilot was a bit cheesy and had a certain flair for drama at moments, but it was also playful and captivating in only the way a superhero show can be. The last few scenes of the premiere were mind-boggling and that alone leaves you begging for answers. Between the unanswered questions and the random pep talk delivered by CW’s Arrow star, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), The Flash looks to be a must see in the future.
