Five athletes placed at the district tennis tournament April 2-3. Senior Cameron McCarthy took second in boys singles, juniors Dylan and Zane Ritter were second in boys doubles, and Ellie Mueller and Adrian Montes finished third in mixed doubles.

By finishing second, McCarthy and the Ritter twins qualified for regionals which was held in San Antonio, April 15-16.

“We played really well, but we could’ve played a little better towards the end to qualify us for state,” Dylan Ritter said. “We couldn’t quite pull it out, but we were really close.”

The Ritters took third in doubles and McCarthy was fourth in singles, and the Ritters came in third as doubles. Only the top two finishers move on to state. Still, having three players advance to regionals was a nice ending for coach Michael Hjort, who is hanging up his coaching hat to focus on AP US History.

“We didn’t win the state championship but going out on top of where we’ve ever been is outstanding,” Hjort said. “I’ve loved watching these kids progress over the last four years, and some of the new players to the program are really going to help carry this program. I really look forward to watching them.”
