PLAYING THE FIELD
Varsity soccer player reflects on season and being part of team
April 4, 2014
The best thing you can do in high school is be a part of something bigger than you.
As a measly freshman I decided to try out for the soccer team to see if I could contribute anything the team. To my surprise, I made the varsity squad. That year we hit the ground running. The outcome of the season did not represent the effort and hard work we put in through the long, grueling season, but that year created the spark that still burns today.
Sophomore year was a big year for us. Not only did we have our first winning season in school history, but we made the playoffs for the first time ever. Sadly, our playoff run ended quickly due to a depressing loss in the first round. The best thing about that year was that our abilities had yet to peak.
This year, we have made school history as the first boys’ team to win a district championship. It was quite an unbelievable feat and what’s even better is that no one can ever take that moment away from us. We will forever be district champions.
However, our season has just begun. We have advanced to the third round of playoffs, the farthest we have ever been. Our first game was against Austin Reagan, who killed our playoff run last year. On our home turf, we won 1-0 to secure a second round spot. Our next game was against Connally and we fought a hard game at their stadium to win 2-1.
Thursday we faced Marble Falls in the third round, the only team in our district that we have hadn’t beat. Not only that time were we more prepared, we were out for revenge. We won 2-1 in overtime. Logan Zipkes had the equalizer in the second half that allowed us to go into overtime. David Camacho scored in the last three minutes in the second half of overtime. We never gave up the fight.
When I’m out there on the field, I feel at home. The soccer field is a place where I’m able to control the present and future, a place where I am able to play the game I love. I can’t wait to go back out on that field and continue on our state playoff run.
