UPDATE: The varsity boys won their first round playoff game against Reagan 1-0 and advanced to the second round. In the second round March 27, they beat Connally 2-1.

After earning a district record of 6-1-3, the varsity boys soccer team clinched the 26-4A district title.

“It shows great improvement for the seniors,” senior Devin Tharp said. “When they were freshmen they were getting beat 12 to zero, so it shows how far we have come in such a short amount of time.”

This year’s district championship marks the first in team history and the first title for a boys’ athletic team. Along with that, the guys set a school record with 11 regular season wins. The team was led in goals by Tharp who scored 19 goals this year and senior Alex Pena with 17.

A 3-1 win over Vandegrift March 7 clinched the district championship for the team. The guys ended the regular season Tuesday, March 18 with a 3-3 tie against Marble Falls. While the team was ahead 3-0 going into the half, the Mustangs came back with second half momentum to score three goals and tie up the game.

In the first round of playoffs, the team will face Reagan High School Monday, March 24. The bi-district game will be played before the Raiders’ home crowd at 6 p.m. Reagan is the same school that eliminated the guys from the playoffs last year. They won the first round playoff game 2-0.

“I think we will win because we are motivated,” Pena said. “We lost to this team last year, and this year we are hungrier.”
