Ten swimmers qualified for the regional meet after placing in six events and five relays at district, Saturday, Jan. 25 in Killeen.

“I’m really happy with the number of people who made it,” coach Brooke Doherty said. “That’s almost half of the team, and they all deserved it.”

Senior Amanda Alspaugh won both of her individual events, taking first in the 200 yard Individual Medley and first in the 500 yard Freestyle. Alspaugh finished the 500 Free more than a second and a half faster than second place Vandegrift.

“I did what I needed to do which was place first and put myself in a good position for regionals,” Alspaugh said.
Sophomore Haley Timmons also won one of her events, taking first in the 100 Butterfly, completing the race in less than a minute.

In the boys’ individual races, senior Jeremy Penberg won the 100 Free and took second in the 50 Free. Senior Pablo Rodriguez was fourth in the 100 Fly.

All five of the relays placed, including the boys 200 Freestyle taking second.

“District was a great experience and I had a lot of fun swimming with my friends and supporting my teammates and I look forward to swimming at regionals,” Penberg said.

Three swimmers placed at the regional meet in Houston Feb. 7-8, qualifying for the state meet.

Alspaugh won the 200 IM, setting a region record. She also took fourth in the 500 Free. Timmons won the 100 Butterfly.
In the boys’ races, Penberg finished third in the 50 Free and second in the 100 Free.

“I think the swimmers hard work paid off,” Doherty said. “We have a very fast region and the team represented Rouse well. We not only have some state qualifiers, but we had several best times as well. I was impressed with everyone’s ability to compete at a high level.”

The three swimmers will now compete at the state meet at The University of Texas at Austin, Feb. 21-22.
