Through all the hustle and bustle of today’s world, certain games are played to achieve goals. American Hustle is a story about professional con man, Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) being forced to work for Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) to spot out corruption that targets mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). Meanwhile at home, Irving’s life that is held together by delicate stitches is falling apart due to his rambunctious wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence).
The acting was superb. All the actors portrayed their part perfectly, especially Bale, Adams and Lawrence. Bale’s character was always caught between two worlds, does he pursue he heart with his partner in crime, or does he be the good husband that Rosalyn craves. Throughout the movie, his character evolves into a very complicated and confused con artist.
Adams gives an Oscar worthy performance. She has this aspect of wanting to live on the dangerous side of life, but keeping her limits which is why she had agreed to help Irving in the first place. Among her best scenes were the scenes when she was hustling DiMaso into falling for her, giving her a playing card advantage over the FBI.
Lawrence was easily the best actress in the film. It was nice to see her broken out of her Hunger Games shell and fresh into a new character since she is the ever growing face of Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire. However, thanks to Rosalyn’s incompetence there is a soft glaze of humor in this movie which makes it intellectual comedy.
Unfortunately, American Hustle is a little too long and drawn out. The plot had unimportant parts that did show character development, but were not necessary to keep in the movie. The writing was superb, but you really had to pay attention to see the overall plot of the film which was a hustle, inside a hustle, inside another hustle. However, the amazing acting made up for the length and extended plot.
Overall, American Hustle was a movie-theater worthy movie. At the Golden Globes this past Sunday, the film won three awards. Amy Adams won Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Supporting Actress, and the overall film won Best Motion Picture for a Comedy. The film was full of its dramatic moments and moments that made you laugh, and if you’re a Jennifer Lawrence fan, this is the movie for you. Be sure to hustle to the theatre to check out American Hustle, one of the best films I have seen all year.
