Halfway through their season, the varsity wrestling team has won eight duals and placed at three tournaments.
“It’s going great, very, very pleasantly surprised with how the kids are wrestling,” coach Brad Bresnehen said. “They’re responding well, they keep rising to whatever challenge is in front of them.”
The team is 8-0 in duals. They beat Canyon, Shoemaker and Eastview at a tri-dual in Georgetown, Nov. 26. They won the Georgetown dual tournament, Dec. 7, beating McNeil, Ellison, Cedar Park and Vista Ridge. They beat Cedar Park again Dec. 12 in their first home dual.
“I’m ecstatic. I set up our toughest dual schedule, and the kids keep winning big matches,” Bresnehen said. “The Vista dual came down to the last match. Freshman Dylan Rowling had to win to secure the dual victory and the team championship, [and] he pinned his kid.”
The team placed second as a team at the Cap Classic tournament, Nov. 22-23. Seven junior varsity and seven varsity wrestlers placed, including juniors Evan Coleman and Jesse O’Rourke winning the 170 and 195 weight divisions.
Twelve wrestlers placed at the Foster tournament, Dec. 14, with the varsity boys taking first. Four wrestlers won their weight classes and six made it to the finals.
“I felt we performed pretty good,” junior Dustin Foiles said. “There’s at least a couple matches I think we could’ve done better at, but other than that we performed very well, and I believe next time we face them everyone’s going to be on top of their game and just beat them again.”
Varsity has four more tournaments and duals before heading to district in late January. They have two upcoming home matches, the Raider JV Rumble Jan. 8 and a varsity dual Jan. 15.
