Ultimate fun: Ultimate Frisbee Club starts up, looking for more members

Senior Daniel Britt had an ultimate challenge on his hands.

After friends at his old school introduced him to the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, Britt realized there wasn’t anyone here involved in the sport. Eager to start his own club, Britt filled out the paperwork, recruited seniors David Feeney, Jake Spencer and sponsor Daniel Hagadorn and Ultimate Frisbee Club was founded in September.

“I started it here at Rouse because I knew there wasn’t one,” Britt said. “I love the sport personally and I just thought it’d be a really good way to meet new people and have fun while doing that.”

Ultimate Frisbee is usually played in teams of seven on a rectangular field with two end zones. The frisbee is thrown from member to member until it reaches the end zone, but players are not allowed to run with it. When the frisbee is caught, the team member must stay still until it is thrown again.

“Ultimate Frisbee’s different because it’s just a lot of fun,” Britt said. “People who play have good sportsmanship, there’s something about it that makes it different from basketball or baseball. I guess that it’s just a lesser known sport, but it’s just extremely fun.”

At practice, team members learn different plays and techniques, and practice throwing the frisbee correctly.

“I like practice because I like to hang out with my friends and throw the frisbee with them,” Feeny said. “It’s just all about community and love.”

The club currently has around eight members on average show up to the Monday and Tuesday meetings at the practice football field. However, the club encourages anyone who’s interested to join. Britt’s goal is to get to at least 14 so they can start playing seven-on-seven during practice.

“I’m most excited for just meeting new people and playing, getting more people out there,” Britt said. “We’d love to have like freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors –anybody can play.”
