Students will get a taste of jazz and jive, with the prom theme “A Roaring Affair.”
“Our main concern was doing something interesting,” junior and prom committee Hannah Bennett said. “But we wanted to do something we knew everyone would like.”
As this is still a relatively new school, the committee was initially challenged with finding a theme since they didn’t have much of a template to learn from with past proms.
“I think just because this is only our second prom, we don’t really have anything from past years to build off of,” Bennett said. “But last year’s theme didn’t seem to work for everyone so we definitely wanted to do better this year.”
Inspiration eventually struck from the concept of modern style meeting old-fashioned glamour.
“We were talking about having a Pinterest-type theme for prom, but it had to correspond to some kind of time period,” senior Cassidee Johnson said. “We thought the 1920s was a cool, glamorous idea.”
Students can expect to see pearls, feathers, and the gaudy charm of this dramatic decade.
“We’re really excited about the photos people will be able to take,” senior Brittany Kleen said. “We’re going to have a ton of fun props, the venue is amazing, and we’re going to have a lot of lounging areas. We arranged it so that people could mingle.”
The essence of the theme will mainly go into the venue and its décor, as most students aren’t planning to don their zoot suits.
“It’s kind of cute, I like it,” junior Christina Sheldon said. “Especially since it’s on the same weekend The Great Gatsby comes out.”
This year, prom will be at the Renaissance Austin Hotel: a 10-floor, four-star hotel with 65,000 square feet of meeting room alone.
“It’s huge,” senior Krystin Watkins said. “We’re going to have a bigger dance floor, and it’s going to be fabulous. It’ll be awesome.”
Prom will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. Single tickets were $45 and $75 for couples. The final day to buy tickets was Thursday, May 9.
“I’m really excited to see everyone’s reaction, and watching people enjoy it,” Bennett said. “Last year I wasn’t on the committee so I just went as any student. This year I’m seeing it as something I’m a part of.”
