Grade school was such a simple time. No need for solving long math problems, attempting to spell big words and regurgitating “Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492,” but above all… Science was (and still is) serious business. My favorite thing in elementary school was when the teacher would wheel in those large, clunky TVs and play the VHS tapes or DVDs. But one program on those fat televisions laid the foundations for my education. Bill Nye the Science Guy.
What can I say about Bill? Well, he made learning fun. And nothing he said was more true than, “science rules.” I never got to do ACTUAL science in grade school, only worksheet after worksheet after worksheet. Being able to actually watch science in action while attending grade school got me interested in the strange happenings of our universe. I feel like Bill Nye successfully entertained and educated me simultaneously. After all, weren’t the teachers always trying to get us into education and to think it was fun?
Now that I am in high school, looking back on the good times I had watching Bill Nye, mocking the opening sequence and the kids that explained everything in layman’s terms, I realize all of the cool, sciency stuff I ogled at Bill doing, I get to do. Now instead of watching videos on how to do something, our teachers let us get hands-on in nearly everything we do. Looking at you, Ms. Ross, from all of the preparation for class, to all of the actual science we do today, teachers, thank you.
