Research shows that many children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school do not have access to enough healthy food on the weekend. National Honor Society is currently running a food drive for the LISD Back Pack Food Program.
“I think it’s great that we can help kids that are in the LISD area,” NHS officer Josh Petro said. “We’re trying to get back to them and give them food.”
NHS students have dropped off collection boxes to third period teachers. Teachers sharing boxes should be in adjacent rooms. The one point category is free throws: individual wrapped snacks, ramen noodles, cereal with individual servings, and canned vegetables; two point category is field goals: jelly (no glass), Spaghettio’s, instant oatmeal, canned soup, Easy Mac, fruit cups, and Pop-tarts; the three point category is the three pointers: peanut butter (no glass), canned chicken or tuna, Nutrigrain bars, Hormel microwave meals and chili.
The NHS students will collect food this week and do their final pickup on April 26. The teams of classes/teachers that collect the most points for their food will get a prize at the end of April.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea to see students do this,” NHS co-sponsor Dana Nelson said. “I hope to see of a lot of donations from the Rouse Raiders for the rest of the LISD family.”
