Varsity girls win district track meet, 21 athletes advance to area

The varsity girls won the district track championship, Thursday, April 11. Fourteen athletes contributed to the win, placing in the top six in 12 individual events and three relays.

“The girls competed just like they have been working out and competing all season,” girls coach Kelly Thompson said. “We didn’t have any miracles or surprises happen, they just got after it. Our seniors have been great leaders and have great meet experience and they were able to lead our younger kids and instill a sense of pride in the work they have done, our school and our program. I am extremely happy for these girls to have won a championship and feel blessed to have such a great group of kids.”

The 4×100,  4×200 and 4×400 girls relay teams took first place while five athletes won their individual events. Freshman Madie Boreman won the 1600 and 3200 run, senior Allison Agbasoga took the triple jump and Deja Beechum the long jump. Senior Adriana Reyes won the high jump, clearing five feet.

“Finishing first was the best way I could have asked to finish my high school career,” Reyes said. “When I warming up I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to score some points for my team. Just remember, jump, jump jump.’ Right before I jump, I picture myself making it over the bar. I try to clear my head of all the negative thoughts and let myself know I can do this.”

The varsity boys finished fourth overall with 10 athletes placing in seven individual events and three relays.

“I was very pleased with our kids this year,” boys coach Luke Harrison said. “All we ask our kids to do is give great effort in practice and the meets and the rest will take care of its self, and I think that showed. I believe we set 10 school records this year so far and we are not done yet. So it has been and very exciting year for our track program.”

In field events, junior Jonah Marquez won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet.

“It was a good feeling, but it’s hard to explain because I try to not overthink before my jumps,” Marquez said. “Thinking makes me mess up during my vault. But beating my personal record really pumps me up for the next meet.”

All three of the boys relays placed with the 4×100 and 4×400 taking second and the 4×200 finishing fourth. The 4×400 team broke a school record, finishing in 3:25.68.

“We were all determined to break the record and I’m so excited to know both my team and I get to be on the record boards,” junior Eric Gill said.

The 21 athletes who placed in the top four now advance on to area and will compete against District 26-4A Thursday, April 18. Those who finish in the top four will move on to regionals.
