10) Hello Dolly!
This 1969 romantic comedy follows a matchmaker named Dolly Levi played by the stunning Barbra Streisand, as she tries to make a match of her own with the “well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau) who just so happens to be ready for a wife. It is a fun-loving musical, with dramatic numbers and amazing singing that leaves a smile on your face for weeks.
9) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
The movie is completely different from most musicals, because of the total darkness of the whole picture. The show follows a barber Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) who is searching for revenge on Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) that unlawfully sent him to jail. The songs are very catchy and funny since they talk about killing people while they are dancing around. It’s the perfect blend of dark humor and random singing that makes for a good show.
8) Hairspray
This musical, more than any other, balances the fun of the times and music with the more serious message of integration. The story follows a pleasantly plump teen dancing star, Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) as she strives for her dream of dancing on the local television station during a time where anyone different doesn’t make the cut. Even though there was a previous version made in 1988, I find the 2007 film much better. The whole movie flows much better, without the extra cheesiness that was very prevalent in the other one. This is a fantastic musical that will leave anyone dancing.
7) Mamma Mia!
This is the perfect feel good musical with a catchy ’70s touch. The movie is about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a bride-to-be searching to find her real father much to the distaste of her mother Donna (Meryl Streep), all through hit songs from the group ABBA. This is a wonderful movie with memorable songs and explosive scenes that anybody will love.
6) Rent
Rent is a powerful movie about a serious moment in recent American history and it shows the realities of the epidemic without making it unrealistic. It starts off in the middle of the AIDs epidemic, where it follows Mark Cohen (Anthony Rapp) and the rest of the group as they struggle with love and life in New York City. This version made in 2005, brought the best of the Broadway play with the emotion of great cinematography; this movie is a must see for everyone.
5) Sound of Music
This wonderful classic should be on every list for the pure joy it fills you after watching it. The movie follows a soon to be nun Maria (Julie Andrews) as she becomes a nanny for Captain Von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) children, all seven of them. The movie simply makes everyone happy when they watch it and leaves them smiling for hours.
4) West Side Story
This 1961 movie has the perfect love at first sight story with a tragic twist that engages anyone. The musical follows a Puerto Rican girl name Maria (Natalie Wood) and Polish teen named Tony (Richard Beymer) as they fight for their true love. This new take on Romeo and Juliet is full of great rhythm that makes anyone fall in love with it.
3) Grease
This classic movie is usually one of the first musicals they think of when asked to name one and for good reason. This classic musical has everything – dramatic notes, random dancing, true love, flying cars and singing bad boys. This play follows Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsen (Olivia Newton-John) after they become reunited from a summer romance at high school, where things are not as easy as they were on the beach. This is a light-hearted movie that never gets old and is always tons of fun to sing along to.
2) Fiddler on the Roof
This movie shows the perfect transition between the old world with its traditions and the modern world with all of its changes. The movie follows a milkman named Tevye (Chaim Topol) through his normal life as his world begins to change around him with the constant threat of the outside world comes closer. Everyone needs to see this movie, not only for the amazing music, but for the message that comes with it that only a musical can bring out.
1) Les Miserables
Even though it is the newest, only coming out only this December, it has an amazing impact on audiences. The film is about Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) and his journey to become a better man during a rough time in French history. It is impossible not to leave the movie theatre crying with all of the emotion that is packed into the film. The whole movie is also completely sung, with the exception of a few words, which makes it feel more real and you don’t get taken aback like you do in some when they just break out into song. This is a fantastic movie and if you are going to watch just one on this list, this should be the one.
