Many high school athletes start off playing their sport at a young age and aspire for greatness. Senior Jesus Wong de Leon, one of the boys’ soccer captains was definitely one of those bright eyed kids. Starting at the age of four, his dad encouraged him to start playing. So once in high school, he made it one of his goals to become a captain.
“It’s hard, because you have more responsibility then the others,” Wong de Leon said. “However, it feels good, because I see how I’ve improved throughout the years. I love the feeling of playing soccer. It is my passion.”
Graduating this year comes with many bitter moments like leaving a team behind.
“Throughout the last four years we created a family more than the team,” Wong de Leon said. “Spending time with them feels like I’m at home when I’m with the team. I feel happy.”
Wong de Leon has helped lead to the team to their strongest season in school history. With a 2-1 win over Marble Falls in the second round, the Raiders clinched their first-ever playoff spot. The history-making event has the captain happy to have additional memories to share with his sport.
“I think my favorite moment with the team hasn’t happened yet,” Wong de Leon said. “I think we have higher expectations for ourselves. That’s why my best moments will happen these next few weeks.”
