Senior Sigi Martinez placed 15th at the state powerlifting meet, March 23 in Abilene. He qualified to compete there after placing first in his weight class at the regional meet March 22 at Vista Ridge.
“It’s an amazing feeling knowing that my hard work paid off to know that I can say that I’m the strongest person in our region for weight class,” Martinez said. “It was a fun experience overall, but also disappointing for the fact that I should have performed better at state.”
Also at regionals, senior Chris Hendricks placed fifth in his weight class.
“It was a pretty cool experience making it to regionals,” Hendricks said. “And be able to make it that far with no regrets.”
Earlier in the season, four lifters placed at the Vista Ridge meet. Martinez won the 165 weight class with a 1,115 lb total while teammate, junior Ryan Sanchez placed fourth in the same class with 835 lbs total. Senior Eddie Guzman placed second in the 220 lb class with 1,120 lbs total and Hendricks took first in the 148 lb weight class with 1,030 lbs total.
This was Martinez and Guzman’s final year to compete in powerlifting. Sanchez and Hendricks will return next year.
“Powerlifting is a very competitive, yet fun sport,” Martinez said. “Where the environment can get very intense because once you lift, the pressure is all on you.”
