Varsity girls soccer is heading to playoffs for the first time in history. The girls won against Marble Falls 3-0 on March 5, sealing the spot.
“We’ve worked hard to be able to make playoffs,” senior captain Katherine Lugo said. “We barely missed it last year and it’s just very exciting.”
They competed in the Centex Tournament at Killeen ISD, Jan. 11-12 and earned the championship and took third in the Think Pink & Kick Cancer Cup.
“We play in one of the toughest districts in the state and to be able to compete in with them it takes a lot of talent,” Lugo said. “Even if we’re down in a game or we just feel like there is no hope, we just keep playing our hardest.”
The girls headed into district against Cedar Park on Feb. 8, losing to them 2-0, but redeemed themselves on Feb. 12 against Leander, winning 5-0.
“It feels great to be going to playoffs,” senior goalie Breanna Chamberlain said. “We’ve been working towards this for months, some of us for years, and it’s an awesome feel to know that it’s paying off.”
The girls then had a tough run in districts, only winning against Leander again 6-0 on March 1 and Marble Falls.
“District weren’t too shabby,” Chamberlain said. “There’s always room to improve, but I’m happy with the way the team has played and gotten better since the first game of the season.”
The girls play their final district game against Vandegrift on March 19, losing 2-1, but still securing a spot in playoffs. The girls will play their first playoff game at home, March 25 at 6 p.m against McCallum.
“I’m really excited because it’s what we’ve been working towards for four years, and it’s rewarding,” senior Marissa Naab said. “It’s great to finally have a winning season.”
