Six students placed at the Westwood High School academic meet, Saturday, Feb. 23. More than 50 area schools competed in the competition, making it the biggest meet the team attends this year.
Senior Rachel Sloan took first in News Writing, sixth in Headline Writing and advanced to semifinals in Prose Interpretation. Senior Danton Waggoner placed first and senior Mara Carrion Cordoza placed sixth in Ready Writing. Senior Brianna Rood was fifth in Poetry Interpretation and senior Brandy Giordano took fifth in Prose Interpretation. Junior Matthew South also advanced to semifinals in Poetry Interpretation.
“It was really surprising and awesome that so many of us were able to place,” Sloan said. “It’s really great practice for us and it gets us ready for district better than any other competition even though it’s scary.”
The UIL academic team will compete at district March 23, which will be hosted at RHS.
