There’s a new diamond girl in the dugout.
Lacey Blissit, an ACE, Health and Personal Fitness teacher, has taken over head coaching duties for the varsity girls softball team.
“I love that it’s a team sport and that it teaches the girls to sacrifice for a common goal,” Blissit said. “You have to persevere because it’s a game of failures. It’s great for teaching life lessons.”
Before coaching here, Blissit was an assistant coach at Grapevine Colleyville High School in Dallas. And while this is the coach’s first time to be a head coach, the team says they’ve adjusted well to their new leader.
“She works us a lot harder and she challenges us a lot more,” junior Dani Moore said. “She makes us want to be the best we can be.”
In the past few years, the softball team has struggled in competition. However, the girls have shown optimism about their new coach and training.
“We’re really confident,” junior Dani Moore said. “The whole team is a lot more confident this season.”
This year, Blissit and the rest of the team are motivated to really make a breakout season, and they have plans on how to do so.
“Basically, the goal is to compete in playoffs,” Blisit said. “We’re working hard in the weight room, and we’re trying to master the fundamentals in competition.”
Softball had a challenging season last year. They only won one district game, and finished the season with an overall score of 2-15.
“They’re working hard, and they’re committing, which is wonderful to see,” Blissit said. “They’re a great bunch of kids.”
This year the team has already started on a strong note. In their first game, they crushed Connally 15-0, Jan. 29.
“Every day matters, it’s our time, that’s our motto,” Blissit said. “We’re ready to establish a new successful team.”
The team travels to Burnet Feb. 12 with JV playing at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. They play on the road until they return home for their first district game, Feb. 27 against Vista Ridge.
