Cinderella having her glass slipper sliding perfectly on her foot, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty waking up with a magical kiss from Prince Charming, Jasmine riding on a ‘magical carpet’ off into the sunset with her eternal love, Aladdin.
Sounds like a really good Valentine’s Day right? Doesn’t it make you think that you could live through something so scandalous, or does it make your heart flutter into a million beats a second?
Now listen to this: Cinderella never meeting her Prince Charming. Snow White bites the poison apple and never wakes up. Sleepy Beauty stays in a coma for the rest of her life while her “to-be-husband” finds someone else. Hmm, sounds disappointing, doesn’t it? Because let’s face the true facts, ladies and gentlemen. Reality isn’t a fairytale: it’s just life, and it can suck.
Fairy tale stories and movies have taken a huge part of this delusion in our world today. They want us, especially women of all ages, to continue to believe that everything will go right. That everything about love is supposed to be fun and adventurous and amazing, which, I will be honest, can happen to some people. It’s not like everyone has that much luck of finding that one attractive fellow from a military base (Dear John), or that one who will be by your side till the very end (Twilight), or that one guy who would be willing to make you remember every single event that ever happened between you and him because you have amnesia from a car crash (The Vow.)
The fact is, we are being tricked or fooled, that love is everything we wished for. But in reality, it is more difficult and complicated than it should be. Love is a rollercoaster, but sometimes, it’s a ride not willing to take.
