Poppy, Poinsettia, Rigatoni, Vermicelli, Mozzarella, Gorgonzola. This is more than a series of fun-to-say things. On Feb. 7, Advanced Productions and Junior Varsity Theatre will take the names of these characters for the annual Children’s Show, a play for Baghdad Elementary School’s second grade classes.
“This is the time of the year when we can feel as though we’re doing something for the community,” junior Austin Thompson said. “It’s a great feeling entertaining children who aren’t as fortunate as others.”
Baghdad Elementary is the district’s lowest-income school, and for their second-graders, this is their only field trip of the year. This show has been a tradition of Advanced Productions since RHS opened, and the students of AP love it just as much as the kids.
“I hope we’ll entertain the children,” sophomore Logan Fish said. “I hope they have a good time.”
Advanced Productions will perform “The Flower Sisters,” which is about sisters Poinsettia, Poppy and Camellia, who must escape a trap they’ve been lured into. JV will perform “The Pasta Brothers,” which is about brothers Vermicelli and Rigatoni, who outsmart the swindler Countess Provolone for a fortune. Both plays are parts of a series, and each is equal in childishly charming hilarity.
“I think that it’s just going to be a fun experience for the children because they’re going to get a good show and then we give them treasure at the end,” sophomore Adrianna Cascaddan said. “It’s going to be fun for us, too.”
The Children’s Show is an opportunity for the theatre students to interact with an audience outside their age group, and it’s an opportunity for the children to get a taste of performing arts.
“The show lets children experience a theatrical performance,” senior Brandy Giordano said. “It allows us to inspire them.”
