Basketball took juniors Baylee Peck and Korvette Phillips over 10,000 miles away…and a few thousand more around. Girls from Leander, Pflugerville and Georgetown came together and compiled a club basketball team, competing all over Europe during the summer months.
“We started out as different teams and branched out,” Phillips said. “And my dad knows Adrian Peterson, and it all just went from there.”
The team competed in countries from Italy to Austria, and became the first team in America to win first place in their age bracket.
“I think the best part was just being able to have that experience and having the opportunity to build this kind of character at an early age,” Peck said.
That summer experience has helped the girls with their playing at home. In non-district game, the team went 14-6 and they opened up district play in December with a 51-45 win over Vandegrift, the team’s first win over the Lady Vipers. With a 4-2 record right now, the team had a close one-point loss to Leander Jan. 2 and back to back wins over Marble Falls and Cedar Park the following week. The 42-39 win over the Lady Timberwolves was another first for the team and closed out the first round of district.
“Our past two games were really good,” Peck said. “We’re all keeping positive thoughts.”
With just six more games to go, district wraps up at Cedar Park Feb. 1, but the girls hope that won’t be their last time on the court.
“[It’s been] pretty good this season,” Phillips said. “I feel confident that we’ll make it to playoffs, and our attitudes are improving with each game.”
