Let your hair down and get ready to dance—Footloose is coming to campus. The theatre department is preparing for the show for their spring musical.
This energetic musical follows a senior named Ren McCormack and his mom as they move from the fast-paced life in Chicago to a small town Bomont in Georgia. Unlike the city, there is absolutely no dancing allowed, because of the fear it will lead to other disruptive things. The main person leading this force is Reverend Shaw who sees it as his duty to lead the town down the right path. Ironically his daughter, Ariel is the town party person, doing everything in her power to go against her father’s wishes, including wearing her striking red boots. With such dynamic characters, the cast had to push their limits to become them.
“I always loved Footloose,” said senior Josh Pagan, who will play the main character Ren. “He’s a teenage hot guy that is fighting for something he believes in. It’s a fun character that gets to dance a lot and he pushes me as an actor and a singer especially.”
Being that this musical is all about dancing, the department is stepping up the choreography to match the town’s excitement of being free. This makes the months before the performance that more tough with everyone having to learn the more complicated steps.
“A lot of people are going to have to step it up a notch,” senior Catlin Topham said. “However, that will make the musical better than anticipated. Everyone is really working hard to make it perfect.”
Footloose will hit the stage Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in the auditorium at 7 p.m.
“The show will knock your socks off,” theatre director Stephanie Smith said. “The biggest cast we have ever had performing the most difficult and fun dancing we have ever had. This show will be incredible.”
