The Cinderella season has ended.
The Raiders historic playoff run ended on Saturday with a 42-14 loss to Georgetown, who now moves onto the 4A, Division 1 state championship.
“I don’t think they have a clue what they just did,” head coach Joshua Mann said. “The way it built the community and the way it pulled everything together.”
The Raiders’ improbable run in the postseason included four playoff wins before the semifinal loss at Gupton Stadium. The team finishes their season 10-5 and one game shy of the state championship.
“It sucks coming out here and losing this close,” sophomore running back Billy Ray McCrary said. “It’s going to be so hard saying good bye to all of these seniors. They were just such good role models they showed us what we have to do to be successful and we are going to follow everything they did and try to get here next year.”
The Eagles’ offense came out strong from the beginning, getting on the board first after Georgetown quarterback Jake Hubanek’s long pass put them on the 3-yard line and Austin Weston ran it on the next play for a 7-0 in the first quarter. The Raiders answered back with a 47-yard run by Billy Ray McCrary to tie the score 7-7.
In the second quarter the Eagles would score twice, off running back Tyler Moody’s 1-yard run and Hubenak’s 53 yard pass to Ryan Bedford to give Georgetown a 21-7 lead at the half.
The Raiders receive to start the third quarter and take more than five minutes off the clock as they converted two fourth downs and AJ Badour scored on 3rd and 2 to cut the lead to one touchdown.
But the Eagles would continue to overpower the defense, effectively move down the field, scoring three more touchdowns to put the game away. In one of the Raiders’ last ditch attempts to scores in the fourth quarter, Pelt was heading to the end zone, but fumbled at the 17.
The Eagles’ defense would hold the Raiders to 165 yards rushing and 90 passing.
“We had a great season all year, we really didn’t put our best game together tonight,” senior Josh Petro said. “It shows through the result. I really wish it was different but there are no regrets. We definitely put together a great season and I’m proud of each and every one of these guys out here.”
After the game, Mann drew the players together to talk to them about the loss, encouraging them to not tear up despite the loss.
“Like we said all year, clear eyes, I know it stings seniors, but don’t cloud your eyes right now,” Mann said. “You understand me? Gosh almighty look what you did. Look what you delivered to a community. Look what you delivered each and every week, look what you did. Do not, for one minute, hang your heads in shame. You defy all the laws, you defied everybody every week. You defied when people said this couldn’t be done and you did something that’s more spectacular and amazing. You are champions.”
When they broke Pelt called them all back in for one last word.
“I told all the guys it was an honor to play with them,” Pelt said. “And that I’ll never forget each and every one of those guys it’s been great to build a relationship with them and it’s been such a fun journey to be with those guys.”
