Habitat for Humanity will have their first build of the year Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Georgetown. The club has gone from seven members last year to 15 this year.
“I think our build’s going to be a great experience,” president Trevor Riek said. “All of the hard work we put into it will contribute to a great house, and make the receiving family very happy.”
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization where volunteers get together to build homes for the less fortunate. Last year, the club participated in two builds, and they plan on participating in five this year, including homes that are being rebuilt after the fires last fall.
“[Habitat for Humanity] gives people who live in substandard housing a quality place to live,” sponsor Daniel High said. “I really look forward to this build, since it’s our first of the year.”
The club recently built a life-sized playhouse that will be auctioned off at the Georgetown Habitat headquarters with the proceeds helping cover some of the building costs.
“Building the playhouse was a blast,” sophomore Deanna Snyder said. “I especially enjoyed using the power tools, and it’s for a great cause as well, which is awesome.”
The November build is for a couple and their four children. It is scheduled to be finished in late November or early December. During the build, students will paint the house and add the finishing touches.
“I’m really excited for the build,” junior Kayla Parker said. “It’s my first one with Rouse Habitat for Humanity, and it’ll be fun with all of my new friends doing something that benefits the community.”
