With only 17 girls on the roster at the beginning of the season, making the varsity team was a challenge. So for three girls, it was even more exciting – since they were only sophomores. Yaneisy Lua, Emily Hanaway and Taylor Black were underclassmen on the varsity volleyball team this year.
“It feels pretty awesome,” Hanaway said. “I felt pretty nervous since I’m new to the school and I really didn’t know here I’d end up.”
Naturally, their first match was both exciting and agitating, but the girls pulled through to help the team begin the season with a five-game winning streak.
“It was very nerve-racking the first time,” Lua said. “But I knew that I just had to help the team and get the win.”
The girls also got some company from freshman Jamieson Lee who moved up to varsity after playing on freshman and junior varsity earlier in the season. Varsity, however, has not had a completely smooth season. Despite having won more than 20 matches overall, the girls only won two district matches.
“We could do better, but we could always do worse,” Black said. “We have a good future and we’re all looking for improvement.”
Both wins were over Marble Falls, a 3-1 win Sept. 18 and a 3-0 win, Oct. 10.
“We rose to the occasion,” senior Allyson Dahlmann said. “It was fun being able to compete with one of the top schools in the district.”
The team had their last match of the season Tuesday at Dripping Springs. For the five seniors, this was their last high school match.
“This season has definitely brought us closer together as a team,” senior Chase Horn said. “And I’m excited to see what the new team will be able to do next year.”
