Austin is rolling out the red carpet again this year for the 19th annual Austin Film Festival. The festival will take place Oct. 17-25 this year at designated theaters around downtown Austin. The AFF is a festival dedicated to honoring the writing talent behind Austin films.
Famous panelists this year include Zak Penn, co-writer of The Avengers, Damon Lindelof, the writer of Prometheus and Paul Feig, the writer of Bridesmaids. The festival’s choice of films will celebrate films made in Austin and films that center around a strong screenplay. The festival also features writing workshops held by professional independent film writers.
The highlighted film this year will be The Silver Linings Playbook, which won the Audience Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year. Among the accompanying films are The Sessions, The Fligh, and The Quartet.
“The most intriguing thing about the Austin Film Festival ,and the reason I will attend, is that it celebrates local and independent film makers and gives them a chance to expose their work to a large audience,” senior Oliver Gelleni said. “As well as all of the panels, parties and awards that take place during the week.”
Interested students have a couple of ticket options. The cheapest is a film pass for $50 which allows access to a film pass party and several premieres including Opening Night, Centerpiece and Closing Night. Film pass holders also can see any of the indie and studio films during the eight day festival, although badge holders will receive higher priority for seating. The Badge categories start at $125 and go up to $650, with badge holders receiving access to various daytime panels and late night parties.
