Cross Country wins dual against Vandegrift

In their first meet, the cross country team won the annual Dual in the Sun against district rival Vandegrift, Friday, Aug. 24. Senior Andy Mask won first place in the boys race and sophomore Savannah Escobar won first place for the girls, culminating in the team’s overall victory.

“It was a dual meet we started last year,” coach Kelly Thompson said. “The format of the race is that everyone races and everyone scores, and the team with the lowest score wins. We made a big trophy for it and everything. Vandegrift won last year so it was pretty nice having to see them handing the trophy over to us.”

The Dual in the Sun was the first cross country meet of the season and gave the team a chance to compete against other schools instead of racing each other.

“It was a really good start to the season,” Mask said. “We’re doing better than ever this year. It was a good accomplishment beating them for the first time.”

The team has six more meets in preparation for district in late October. The team left Friday for their second meet in The Woodlands, Texas.
