The varsity tennis teams competed at the District 4A-25 tournament April 3-4 with two doubles teams placing.
In varsity boys doubles, freshmen Dylan and Zane Ritter placed third. They beat Vandegrift’s No. 2 doubles team, but then lost to the Lake Travis No. 1 team who eventually won the championship. They would take on the No. 2 doubles team from Lake Travis and win, moving to a final match for second or third. The Ritters took on Vandegrift’s No. 1 team, losing the match to finish third.
“We could have beat Vandegrift,” Dylan Ritter said. “We should have been more positive on the court and had more energy.”
In varsity mixed doubles, junior Sina Marchione and sophomore Cameron McCarthy placed fourth at the tournament. They beat the Vandegrift doubles team No. 2, but then lost to Vandegrift’s No. 1 team, along with No. 2 team from Lake Travis.
“We could have played a little bit smarter,” Marchione said. “We did everything we could, we tried hard and practiced a lot, but it wasn’t enough to win.”
In addition, freshman Adrian Montes and sophomore Aaron O’Brien made it to quarterfinals in boys doubles while sophomore Londyn Thetford advanced to the quarterfinals in girls singles. This was the first time in school tennis history had this many students advance to quarter and semifinals.
“We did okay for our first time,” Montes said. “We needed more communication, though.”
At the junior varsity tournament, April 10, junior Scott Jellison finished fourth. Senior Sean Carnett competed in the boys singles and made it to the quarterfinals. In girls doubles, Cailey Wiese and Ellie Mueller also made it to the quarterfinals.
“We played pretty well, but there is always room for improvement,” Mueller said. “Our teamwork and communication has always been our stronghold.”
