“Being Elmo” is an independent documentary following Kevin Clash, the creator of the childhood icon Elmo from “Sesame Street.” The film, which is available on Netflix and was released on DVD April 3, narrates his background story and how he pursued his life-long endeavor of being a puppeteer. It also shows his everyday life in the role as a voice actor, senior puppet coordinator, and senior creative consultant of the popular television series.
Growing up as an avid “Sesame Street” fan, there was something oddly sobering about seeing what happens behind the widely-known children’s show. In reality, a ton of work is required to run this franchise, despite the frequent moments of fun. Although there is something a little sad about seeing behind the curtain of our childhood, I find it necessary to know the truth.
Besides, this movie is totally worth it. Clash, with his positive attitude and friendly demeanor, is almost impossible to dislike. I also liked the narration of Whoopi Goldberg, and I found the behind-the-scenes takes and interviews entertaining as well as enlightening. However, I thought they focused too much on the fortunate aspects of his journey, making it seem as though his life is a completely happy one. I wish they delved a bit deeper into his divorce or the death of his idol, the late Jim Henson.
Overall, though, I thought this movie was fantastic. It is inspiring and heartwarming, and reminds us why we follow our dreams. It’s no wonder that this movie won 11 awards from film festivals such as South by Southwest and the Sundance Film Festival.
