Staffer learns from Camp Wannaleada experience

Do You ‘Wannaleada’?

Being a kid that never went to camp, I didn’t know what to except when I signed up for Camp Wannaleada. However, when I got to camp everyone was very welcoming and we immediately sat down for supper which consisted of spaghetti and meatballs with a salad, some fruit, a soda and dessert. It was great. The food, in my opinion, was one of the best parts.

After that, we all met up in the gym and played games to get to know each other. There’s something about running around playing tag that makes you become friends with a total stranger, which just happened to become the theme of the day.

As the night set in, so did the hunt, the scavenger hunt that is. All the kids split up into teams based on our favorite candy and went around doing challenges for points and finding glow sticks along the way. To decide the winning team, a tug-of-war challenge was put into place. Although my team didn’t win, and I got dragged in the dirt, it was one of the highlights of the trip.

Bunking up and getting ready for bed meant ghost stories and s’mores all around. But we had to get to bed at a reasonable hour for the team building and ropes course the next day.

Breakfast was served at 8 a.m. sharp, just early enough for people to complain about.  With our bellies full of breakfast tacos we headed off to go do some team bonding with our designated group leader. Playing games which seemed pointless, but had deeper meaning, really showed why we came to the camp in the first place.

But what we were all waiting for was just a couple hours away, the high ropes. Climbing up a log pole to a tiny platform only to jump off, hoping to catch a bar and look something like that acrobats you see in the circus, was a thrill like no other. Having the feeling like your stomach was in your throat was nerve-racking but I loved every minute of it.

All in all, the trip was a great experience and if I could go back tomorrow I most definetly would. With new friends and shared memories it was a trip I’ll never forget.
