We all grow up listening to parents and teachers ask what we want to be when we grow up. Who will we become? What significance will we have on the community?
Thanks to COOL Week, seniors got the opportunity to experience the reality of their dream job. Career Opportunities on Location is an annual LISD event that allows seniors to visit a job location and learn more about a possible career path. This year’s COOL Week occurred the week of February conference.
Senior Danielle Stone got the chance to work with elementary students at Davis Elementary.
“You get to experience hands-on and you get to explore doing what you want to do,” Stone said. “I have always wanted to be a teacher so this experience was really fun,”
This experience allowed students to see if their passion for something could turn into a career. Senior Rebekah Odom worked for a day at the retail store Kohl’s.
“Mrs. [Kim] Adcock suggested it,” Odom said. “It was a closer location for me and I love fashion. It taught me a lot. I got to meet new people and I had fun doing it.”
With the expense of college weighing on students’ mind, COOL Week was a great opportunity to experience a career field without out spending four years of tuition. Of the 32 RHS seniors who participated, senior Robert Sanchez worked at the Canine Rehab Center.
“I learned to follow and maintain a schedule and to help rehabilitate dogs,” Sanchez said. “It is important. “This [opportunity] can tell you if the career you’re seeking is what you really want.”
