Students’ fascination with The Hunger Games series rising

There seems to always be a book that everyone is raving about and currently it is Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series. And with the first book opening in theatres in two weeks, fans are excited to see the story of survival come to the big screen.

“I’m excited to see how they make the book into a movie and how they portray the characters, and if it’s as good as the book,” junior Brandy Giordano said.

In retaliation for a past uprising, the government holds a nationally televised  event that forces competitors to fight each other until only one survivor remains. The story follows Katniss, a teen girl who must use her wits and instincts to survive.

“It has something for everyone at all ages and boys and girls,” junior Leslie Tate said. “There is violence for the boys and a sort of love triangle for the girls.”

Although the series was initially intended for teens, adults have also been taken with the story, with more than 23.5 million copies sold of the first book. The non-stop pace makes it thrilling and leaving readers wondering what will happen next.

“The world they live in and it’s an interesting story line,” Tate said. “How it could happen in the future and the dystopian setting. I like the realness of it and the war part of it because it doesn’t try to hide it.”

Just like any book, fans have strong reactions to the characters introduced.

“I really like Finnick,” sophomore Elizabeth Johnson said. “At first he was misunderstood and judged by Katniss, but throughout the book his true character comes out, and you discover that he is caring and loving.”

Junior Kylee Schneider loves the suspense and storyline, her favorite character is a 12-year old “Tribute” named Rue.

“She is so sweet and so brave,” Schneider said. “You can’t help but fall in love with her.”

Fans will see Rue and other characters come to life when the movie opens March 23.

“I’m excited for seeing everything coming to life,” Tate said. “What I imagined in my head and what Hollywood creates is different. Everyone had something different and now I will be able to relate it to something.”

The movie version stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale.

“They did a good job with the casting,” Johnson said. “I am interested to see how Josh Hutcherson’s character does.”

Not all the fans are sold on the casting choices.

“There are some characters that I feel like its right out of my head,” Tate said. “As well as others that I feel questionable about and don’t see their vision.”

Tate and other fans will find out in two weeks when the first book of the trilogy opens in theatres.

“Heck yeah, I am going! I got my ticket the first day they went on sale,” Schneider said. “I am going to dress up as a District 12 citizen with an awesome braid.”
