Editor Note: This is one of six stories about obsessions students and faculty have.
Men and women surround the grounds of the movie theater dressed in robes awaiting the premiere of the final Harry Potter movie. Wizards and witches stand across from each other dueling, while others split into two teams and play an impromptu game of Quidditch. Among these midnight movie watchers is junior Joshua Pagan, a true Harry Potter enthusiast.
“At the premiere there was a bunch of people who brought brooms and we pulled out a Quidditch ball and ran around throwing it at each other,” Pagan said. “It was fun until some lady told the theatre people and they took our ball away.”
Pagan has read and owns every book as well as every movie. He began reading the Harry Potter books when they first came out in 1997 and continued reading them when the last book was published in 2007.
“The books are definitely better,” Pagan said. “So much happens in to books that the movies didn’t put in. I think there should have been three parts for some of the movies. Also it gives the brain creative freedom to imagine what’s going on.”
Along with all of the books and movies Pagan owns a myriad of Potter merchandise: a keychain and lanyard, a pen, a wand, a Christmas ornament, a broom, a robe, a scarf and shirts. This paraphernalia is an outward symbolization of his inner obsession.
“All of my friends are obsessed too, if anything it adds to my social life,” Pagan said. “Me and Beth [Hunter] are planning having a Very Potter Musical Party over spring break. It’s going to be awesome.”
Pagan’s obsession stems from his childhood. His mom used to read a chapter to him and his brother before bed every night.
“When I was younger it was something my family did,” Pagan said. “I was still a child so it still had the magic. Now there’s a lot more you can do with it. Now there’s a theme park and a musical that’s hilarious and you can dress up.”
