Six varsity wrestlers placed at the district tournament, Feb. 3-4, at Vista Ridge High School including six first and second place finishes.
“I’m very pleased with the results,” coach Brad Bresnehen said. “I felt like everyone wrestled really well.”
Sophomore Micah Schonfeld won the district championship in the 113 lb weight class. Schonfeld beat a New Braunfels Canyon wrestler in the semi-finals to advance to the finals, and then defeated a Cedar Park athlete to win the championship.
“I felt really good getting first,” Schonfeld said. “I just mentally got set and pictured myself winning.”
Senior Peter Negrete, who has been wrestling for four years, won the 132 lb weight class by defeating a Vandegrift and then Georgetown wrestler.
“I was pretty excited that I got first in district,” Negrete said. “I feel accomplished because all my hard work paid off.”
In the 126 lb weight class, junior Seth Catchpool finished second and sophomore Evan Coleman took fourth in the 152 lb division. Catchpool, Negrete and Schonfeld’s finishes qualified them for regionals Feb. 10.
“I’m disappointed at the performance at regionals,” Bresnehen said. “I felt like they had a chance and I didn’t get them ready.”
Negrete took sixth in the 132 lb weight class while Catchpool was fifth in the 126 division. The junior’s finish made him an alternate to state.
“I wish I had prepared better for regionals,” Catchpool said. “Because I really wanted to go to state.”
In the girls’ competition at district, junior Nakiah Richardson and freshman Elise Coleman placed second in the 102 and 110 weight classes, respectively. Because of injuries, the girls didn’t wrestle, but had the opportunity compete at regionals.
“I definitely could’ve done better,” Richardson said. “I wish things had gone differently.”
At the junior varsity level, 10 wrestlers placed. In their brackets, freshmen Jake Moser and Sidderick Hair placed first, freshman Taylor Looney and junior Dakota Unger placed second, freshmen Bobby Reale and Chris Hoad placed third, and freshman Rory Rood, sophomores Alex Gaskill and Wesley Crisler placed fourth.
“I think we did well,” Gaskill said. “We gave it our best effort.”
With only two seniors, the team will have about 50 wrestlers returning to the program.
“To prepare, we’ve starting maxing out,” Bresnehen said. “We’re beginning our off-season training next week.”
