Everyone has heard of Valentine’s Day, the 14th of February. This holiday has been created in order for couples to celebrate being together. But this begs the question – what about the single people? For this I have an answer: Singles Awareness Day. This holiday also occurs on the 14th, but is for people who are single to be able to celebrate as well. There is nothing wrong with being single, especially in high school. Everyone needs a chance to celebrate regardless of their relationship status.
Single Awareness Day is a great opportunity to escape the stereotype of February the 14th. Valentine’s Day was named after Saint Valentine who was brutally killed for marrying Christians. Why is it more acceptable for couples to celebrate murder, then for singles to have the chance to celebrate themselves? Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their situation.
There are many ways to celebrate Single Awareness Day. Attend a party or throw one for your friends. Go to a non-romantic movie or dinner with other singles, or just get together with a group of single friends. Celebrating Single Awareness Day on the same day as Valentine’s Day is a great way to include everyone.
Single Awareness Day provides an outlet to be optimistic, so if you’re single in February this year, don’t spend the 14th moping around. Take initiative and spend the day celebrating yourself and the freedom you have.
