The theatre department will perform the musical Little Shop of Horrors, Jan. 19-21 at 7 p.m. This year’s musical is about a floral assistant who discovers a man-eating plant. Throughout the play the plant begins to grow and grow until it engulfs the stage.
“I am most excited that it is collaboration between dance, choir, band and theatre snd for Arden Beckham and Ryan Hawthorne because they have never been a lead in a musical before,” choir director Brenda Justice said.
The expectations of the show are high due to last year’s musical selling out both nights. Last year’s success warranted adding a third performance this year, a first for the theatre department.
“I think it will be the best yet,” Justice said. “We have seniors who are intelligent about acting and music and are able to practice on their own and their skill level is much higher.”
Even though the musical is about a plant with a thirst for human blood, there is still comedic moments.
“The audience will enjoy all of the humor,” said senior Arden Beckham who will play Audrey. “Some parts aren’t supposed to be funny but are, like a subtle humor.”
Little Shop of Horrors promises to be upbeat and full of surprises. More than 90 students auditioned in October for the show.
“I think it will be amazing because a lot of talented people are in it,” Beckham said. “Now that we have a full school, it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”
