The varsity football team kicked off the season with a fight against Conally on Aug. 29, winning 55-33. The success carried them through the next match versus Liberty Hill 49-43 which ended in overtime with senior linebacker Ethan Wallace breaking the in-game tackle record of 26.
“It was kind of that peak where I felt like I was constantly going up and getting better and better this year,” Wallace said. “It was definitely overwhelming trying to fill the shoes of the prior linebackers that were at Rouse. I took initiative of the opportunity that I was given in that position and it worked out for me.”
The team lost the next four consecutive games, but won in a landslide against Chaparral 70-7 on Oct. 17. Senior quarterback London Morgan secured the win with five out of his 32 passing touchdowns in the season.
“I would say I didn’t have as much motivation, I had more discipline,” Morgan said. “Waking up in the morning, getting my own practice. What did motivate me was my parents and my teammates and my coaches.”
Morgan received a full ride scholarship to play football at the Naval Academy, where he plans to attend the next four years and continue to serve in the military for five years after.
“Football is my life, that’s all I’ve ever known since I’ve been growing up,” Morgan said. “It’ll be fun, learning something new. But it’ll also be hard to blend in with that. It’ll take some time.”
The team’s winning streak continued for the remaining three games, where they won the final game of the season against Glenn 55-40 on Nov. 7.
“The lessons I’ve learned are more than I’ve ever learned in any other sport,” Wallace said. “It’s taught me consistency and discipline, getting through adversity and being able to multitask. It’s connected me with a group of brothers that I’ll have forever.”
