As I start my car, I connect my phone to play music. I raise the volume to the max, knowing there’s just one album that I cannot stop listening to, “The Dream.” It begins any ordinary day.
The Favors, a new band formed by FINNEAS and Ashe, released their debut album, “The Dream” on Sept. 19. Their band features guitarist Ricky Gourmet, drummer David Marinelli. With 12 tracks, this album has been on my top listening list.
The album represents New York’s charm and the complex reality it comes with, exploring the themes of love, loss and acceptance. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of hope and being free. It’s very whimsical, and screams Fleetwood Mac.
Ashe and FINNEAS capture and match each other so well. FINNEAS, older brother of Billie Ellish, is a Grammy award-winning singer, song writer and producer, who has produced music for Ellish. Ashe is an indie pop song writer, most famously known for her “Moral of the Story,” which I used to be obsessed with. It feels so weird now five years later I’m listening to her new album. It’s like closure in some sort of way.
Ashe and FINNEAS have been working on this album for the past two years, starting in 2023. They first released their single, “The Little Miss You Made,” in June of this year. I think Ashe and FINNEAS just balance each other and are flawless. They previously worked in 2021 on “Till Forever Falls Apart,” which I was also obsessed with.
When listening to “The Dream,” I can’t help but feel hopeful for the future. Even if the lyrics don’t convey it directly, the production is timeless, beautiful and exquisite.
My favorite song would be “The Dream,” it’s so catchy especially with the drums and vocals. They build up suspense, and go back and forth between fast and slow tempos. It lifts your mood and lights up your day.
I would highly recommend listening to this album. It’s perfect for any season, any month and any day. Listening to this album can feel like sitting in your car while it’s raining on a Fall day or watching the sun set on the horizon.
Overall, the entirety of the album moves you and pulls you in. I usually don’t listen to a full album but this truly has to be one of my favorites with zero skips. Listening to this album truly brings me so much peace.
