Senior Savannah Deville and junior Logan Deville have been heavily involved in art since they were younger allowing them to form an artist’s connection. The sibling duo see each other as inspiration to create new pieces and evolve their art. Differentiating in styles, Logan uses water pencil sketches, alcohol markers and colored pencils while Savannah loves graphite, charcoal, gouache and oil paints.
“I love his composition and coloring choices,” Savannah said. “Not everyone has a knack for composing a piece, but he seems to have a natural eye for what colors go well together or what shapes make a piece interesting. He’s definitely got a better grasp on color theory than I do.”
Logan, being the younger sibling, constantly looks up to Savannah’s use of art as an outlet during alone time. While their parents were busy, they built a relationship bonded on art.
“I feel pretty proud because I just think it’s really cool what she does, and it makes me a better artist,” Logan said. “It’s just the way we grew up, my brother and Savannah, parents worked two jobs each, and so most of the time it was just home alone, with each other, just hanging out. We’ve always had that really close knit sort of relationship.”
Both medaled in Visual Arts Scholastic Events and won the PTSA awards last year.
“I wouldn’t say we see each other as competition,” Savannah said. “We both create art in such different ways that it’s difficult to influence one another. We definitely give each other feedback and criticism though, so we help each other in that regard.”
This year, only Logan competed in VASE, submitting two pieces both medaling, with one advancing to state. For his state-qualified piece, Logan Deville used alcohol markers and colored pencils to create his piece titled, “Hydra / Sit Here a While.” Deville was inspired by a Buddhist belief to live in the present moment.
“I think that people lost the ability to live in that present,” Logan said. “People were always worried about a lot of different things, too many at a time, the future, the past and I just wanted to make something kind of like that mentality I have.”
Logan is in AP 2D art where it has given him a new outlook on art.
“This year gave me a taste of how it feels to make art, cause you have to,” Logan said. “It’s been pretty stressful, and I can’t imagine how to make art to make ends meet. It’s the kind of profession to get into, you gotta really stand out. People gotta want your stuff.”
