On the first Monday of May, the 2025 Met Gala is set to take place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

With inspiration from the book “Slaves to Fashion: Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” by Monica L. Miller. The exhibit will consist of Black culture, art expression and fashion. With plans for showing fashion from the 18th century to present day they will be accompanied by Miller according to Vogue.

Familiar faces will be seen such as Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharell Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs. The honorary chair title has been given to Lebron James. Breaking Met Gala norms they have made all of the other co-chairs besides Wintour Black men.

Even though being assigned co-chair A$AP Rocky had a trial set. He was facing bad media due to a felony charge which could take away his position as co-chair, but he was ultimately found not guilty.

You can expect to see lots of cultural patterns and statements. With that comes Black designers who will be getting the most calls to demonstrate the essence. Something that will also be paid in close attention to detail is hair. African American’s hair is something that is taken very seriously within the community.

Down to the term “Superfine” that was taken from the memoir of an enslaved Black man who bought his freedom, named William Ellison, this Met Gala is pushing the idea of Black excellence. This is the first time since 2003 that the theme is centered around men. This is also the first time that all co-chairs who aren’t Wintour are African American men.

The public is excited while also nervous to see how this theme plays out. This is a more political side to fashion that not everyone is ready for. Black stylists like Law Roach, who is Zendaya’s main stylist, are excited to showcase their heritage. While some think race should have nothing to do with fashion, others believe it is important to showcase the culture and inspiration.
