The choir program introduces a new team of student officers

Upcoming performances, holiday themed events and new policies are all topics being discussed at a choir officer meeting. With a president, vice president and secretary representing each choir within the program, these elected student leaders take on a new aspect of being in an ensemble.

“My overall goal is to make people feel welcomed and like they can be here without judgment,” Chorale president and senior Iliana Fricano said. “For me, choir has always been where I found my best friends and I want people to have that experience too.”

Class elections took place at the beginning of this school year. Each candidate was required to give a speech to their choir class about why they were qualified for their position. Then, students anonymously casted their votes.

“I chose to run for vice president because I’ve been in choir since freshman year and it’s something I’m really passionate about,” Seraphim vice president and junior Kinsley Keen said.  “I wanted to give back to this program because I love it so much and it’s had such an impact on my life. When I was a freshman, I was so scared and uncertain of what I wanted to do, and choir was one of the classes that I always looked forward to.”

After being elected, the officers hold monthly meetings during advocate. Made up of students from every grade and choir, this team is an opportunity for them to learn what it’s like to not just be a leader, but to work with other leaders as well.

“I like meeting and talking to new people from other choirs,” Keen said. “It can also be challenging sometimes if you’re not communicating effectively with the other officers. I’m still navigating it because it’s my first leadership position and the same for others, so you just have to go about it carefully.”

Officers are expected to take their roles and responsibilities seriously and be a role model for other singers in the program. Presidents and vice presidents start each class by leading warm ups and stretches in addition to reminding peers of important dates and expectations. Secretaries are in charge of taking attendance and keeping things orderly.

“I made a lot of friends through choir, and I got a community to be myself in,” Chorale secretary and senior Olivia Davis said. “My goals are to just set an example for the underclassmen and show them that anyone can be a leader, anyone can contribute to this choir.”
